Software for Windows
This is a list of useful and freely
downloadable software for Windows. This basic collection is also
what I normally install on every Windows machine that I use. The
programs are listed in some kind of install order, i.e. the
programs at the top should probably be installed first.

An absolute necessity to unpack archives. Download at

- ZoneAlarm

A simple and easily handled firewall. Download from Download.com.
- OpenOffice.org

A free and open source office suite with all the power of
commercial competitors. Download at
OpenOffice.org.
- AbiWord

A free and open source word processor without the overhead
of a full office suite. Download at
AbiSource.
- PuTTY

An SSH telnet client. Download at authors
site
- Emacs

An advanced programmable text editor (too difficult for
many). Download at Free
Software Foundation or at the Sunet
mirror. You will also need the Windows keybindings and a configuration file.
- Gimp

An advanced image manipulation program. Download at Gimp.org.
- Gaim

A free and open source messaging program that works well
with all the major IM services (as Yahoo!, MSN, AIM and
others). Download at
SourceForge.
- WinAmp

An mp3-player that is required if any serious work is to be
done. Download at WinAmp.com.
